Itinerary 2 - Lets become active

Day 1
Drive up the Matukituki valley about one hour in the lodge van either you drive or we will provide a driver. Cross the glacial fed Matukituki river by swing bridge and walk for 90 minutes mainly uphill on a well maintained track to the Rob Roy glacier. The foot of the glacier is above the valley and you can look up into the ice depending on the light a deep blue green. As you are on the other side of the valley any ice that breaks off the foot of the glacier falls spectacularly to the base of the valley where it melts and flows into Lake Wanaka.

Wanaka River Journeys provides you with a mountain river eco-journey up the Matukituki River. This trip is rich in nature, culture and history with views of Mt Aspiring and the surrounding glaciers.

Day 2
We strongly recommend this excursion for its awesome beauty.
This is Alpine stimulation at its best fly from our lawn by helicopter to the spectacular Milford Sound. Although called a sound (for the purists a drowned river valley) this is in fact a fjord carved millennia ago by a glacier hence the steep walls and spectacular waterfalls that spill from its rim. There are restaurants and cafes at Milford or a gourmet picnic lunch can be ordered as part of the trip.

Charter trips can be organized by helicopter to Mt Cook or the West Coast tailored to your needs.

Day 3
Drive to Makarora at the northern end of Wanaka and fly by fixed wing or helicopter into the Siberia Valley. Enjoy your packed Lunch and then follow the track from the valley down to the Wilkin River where you will be met by a jet boat and transported down the river to the Makarora base where you left the vehicle. Drive from Makarora a few miles towards Haast till you come to the Blue Pools sign on the left. A brief walk will take you to the confluence of the rivers that make up the pools where the water is very clear and the trout obvious. The forest you walk through is part of the New Zealand rain forest.
